ReadingA big goal for 4th graders in reading is to be able answer questions by finding evidence within a text. This year in fourth grade we will be exploring rich, high level texts both fiction and nonfiction. We will use the texts not only for reading skills, but also for the integration of Science, Social Studies, and Writing.
Language Arts
With new standards and testing methods from the state; clear, coherent writing is a goal for 4th grade in every subject area. Our language arts content will be used to make us better writers. Good writers not only understand basic grammar conventions and spelling, but how to organize and explain their thoughts with vivid descriptions and details.

MathThe big goal for 4th graders in mathematics is to gain a deeper understanding of fractions. Of course we will still be learning and practicing multiplication and division...so practice those facts!
In math, our focus will be to not only understand the basic algorithms (aka 3x4=12) but also to understand why this works. We will we representing math with pictures, models, and written expression. |
ScienceWe will be studying the big 3 of Science: Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science.
In Life Science we will learn about plants, animals, and the way all living things interact with the environment. In Earth Science we will be learning about how the surface of our earth changes, and the cycles of our planet. . In Physical Science, we will be learning about the forces that drive scientific technology: motions, energies, reactions...oh my! Social Studies
In 4th grade Social Studies we will be learning about our country and our history. We will travel with the very first indigenous people across the land bridge to enter our continent and follow our amazing timeline through the first explorers, settlers, creation of our country, westward expansion, the events leading to and through the Civil War, and how our country changed through and adapted through the years that followed. This isn't just HIS-story, it is OUR-story!
